Why I Never Quit: Grit, Grace, and the Long Game

Every Chapter Tried to Break Me

College football taught me discipline. Real estate taught me to read people. The fishing tackle business taught me supply chains. Restaurants taught me everything else — especially the stuff I didn't want to learn.

Every business I've started has tried to break me at some point. A partner who quit. A market that shifted. A pandemic that shut everything down. If I'd quit at any of those moments, nobody would've blamed me. That's the easy choice.

But easy was never the plan.

Grit Is a Decision You Make Daily

People ask me what my "secret" is. There isn't one. Grit isn't a personality trait you're born with — it's a decision you make every morning when the alarm goes off and the numbers aren't where you need them to be.

You decide: am I going to let today beat me, or am I going to show up and do the work? I've made that decision thousands of times. Not perfectly. But consistently enough to build something that matters.

Grace for the Process, Grace for Yourself

Here's something I had to learn the hard way: you can have grit and still have grace. They're not opposites. Grit without grace is just punishment. Grace without grit is just wishful thinking.

Give yourself permission to be a work in progress. Your business is. You are. The goal isn't perfection — it's persistence. Show up, do your best, learn from it, and show up again tomorrow.

The Long Game Always Wins

Every business I've built that lasted — and the ones I lost along the way — taught me the same lesson: the long game always wins. The people who quit are the ones who expected short games. The ones who stay are the ones who understood it was always going to be long.

I'm still building. Still learning. Still showing up. And if you're reading this, still in the arena — I'm proud of you. Keep going. The long game is where the legacy lives.
